TX Review; Tiwa Savage “Water & Garri EP” Is A Step From The Old Into The New

Tiwa Savage Water & Garri EP

If you are looking for the old Tiwa Savage on “Water & Garri” EP, let me break to you real quick; that era is gone and might never come back. That’s a fact.

WATER & GARRI EP REVIEW – Tiwa Savage has always been a multifaceted talented artiste and the Nigeria music formulae have always worked for her, giving her the advantage to dominate charts and make back-to-back hit records. But there comes a time, change happens as people grow and develop their own craft and reach beyond themselves.

“Water & Garri” is an Afrocentric, experimental and transcendental masterpiece crafted by a queen who has proved over and over again that her music can go beyond the borders of her home.

The EP production line consists of Afrobeat, Jazz, Hip-hop and Folk elements. It’s more crafted to appeal to a wider international audience than the usual Nigeria market that she has always represented.

You can hear Neo-Soul and a lot of intriguing moments of recent interpolation of African and American Hip-hop that the likes of Beyonce have been tapping into of late. It’s like Tiwa is trying new waters and somehow it’s working depends on who is listening.

…Now let’s break down this EP so you can get to listening to it.

Work Fada Feat Rich King & Nas

The production of this song is laid-back and soulful with the marching drums breaking in loops; giving the guitars glitters and giving Tiwa Savage and Rich King space to send their vibration of positive energy to the world. The song is about getting your hustle on and getting your feet down to work ( no lazy boys allowed). The vocals are sultry and go into a trance-like cruise whenever the guitar comes back in… it’s really far from what you would expect from Tiwa Savage but she did hold it down and her chemistry with Rich King is impeccable ( they bonded well).

It’s the Nas verse that brings out the beauty of the message because he said it straight with lines like “get out the bed/make some adjustments” that’s profound. Maybe, the Nas verse should have started the song; that would have given many fans a reason to listen to the song to want to stay on and listen to the song. But it’s still a marketing trick to hold people off for longer ( so they can hear Nas). Either way, it’s a good song.

Ade Ori

The jazz elements over Hip-hop drums and percussions give this R&B record a very chilling feel and vibe that will get you nodding and flowing to the free passage of air, wind instruments and the sweet lullaby from the queen. The production plays a more important role in this EP than Tiwa Savage did. Although she brought her A game on with the way she kept fitting into every sequence of the beat, it’s the way she mixes up the Yoruba dialect with Western-style that gives the song its peculiarity. This happens to the only song she doesn’t have features on.

Tales By Moonlight Feat Amaarae

This is an alternative record and it sounds so beautiful too. The Afro-Pop record is very nostalgic. It brings memories of yesteryear as well as the blend in of the new wavy ( heard as Amaarae verse came in). It’s a song about not being sure of the true intentions of a potential lover. Well, it’s the vocals and Afrobeat rhythm that create a mood that you can’t explain. But it lingers and it wouldn’t matter how long you repeat this song, you just get a good feeling about it. This is one of the exceptional records on the EP and another proof that Tiwa Savage can make good music.

Somebody’s Son Feat Brandy

Unlike the previous records on this EP; the production of this record is very important because it took another direction and brought Tiwa back to her zone. Tiwa’s chemistry with Brandy is worth praising too as both sung the chorus screaming “Somebody’s son will love me some day“. The Afro- dance record has a cool background production of chords as the percussion kept the lead-up. One wouldn’t understand what to expect as the record begins but as soon as you get into it, you get lost in it and sing along with the duo as they go about heartbreaks and finding love again.

Special Kinda Feat Tay Iwar

This is a love song mashed up in Afrobeat, Jazz and Funk; it’s a good record but not spectacular as the other records. However, it does have a place on the EP. The sound gives you that funky feel and you can literally get on your vibe as you enjoy the groove of the rhythm.

Tiwa Savage’s “Water & Garri” is a masterpiece that can be perfected into a complete body of work. The new direction in sound and production wouldn’t sit well with many of her Fanbase but it definitely will open her career up to the world and give her the opportunity to grow and explore more of her talents; working with other international artistes.

Although we would have expected her to try out different things and not let the sound & production go in one direction as it did (with somebody’s Son being the only exception), we do hope that in other projects she can diversify with the sound and give everyone something to enjoy.

Well, she did prove she is the queen and didn’t disappoint at all.

This EP is rated an 8.

TX Review; “Queendoncom EP” Is A Bold Move Into The Future But Yemi Alade Can’t Take The Crown Just Yet

The Review of Queendoncom EP, Released by Yemi Alade in August, 2021.

QUEENDONCOM EP- There is no doubt Yemi Alade has ascended the music growth hierarchy year and year again since her break out single “Johnny” in 2014. She has held the torch burning regardless of what the critics have had to say and kept on doing her thing, proving everyone wrong.

It’s the relentlessness in her artistic journey that has brought her thus far. Needless to say that she hasn’t really gone beyond her first single “Johnny” in terms of success yet she has done well in keeping her profile up, crafting her sound, exploring with mainly African rhythm, shooting quality video, getting endorsements; and featuring different A list artistes from Nigeria, Africa, and diaspora.

It’s this commendation of (Yemi Alade) her stance and growth that we hope all will see in this new EP titled “Queendoncom“. (GET HERE)

The sound on the EP shows a lot of improvement especially in her choice of production and style particularly the style of writing (the lyrics are better here).

So, keep an open mind because there are much better songs here than her previous work.

OGOGORO is the first single on the EP. It already has a video blowing up the TV and the internet. This song has a unique formula (not something that hasn’t been done before) as she took the laid back route and projected her confidence into the sound, giving it a very captivating feel. She goes rides with strength on the Afro-Pop record. The lyrics are simple, the imagery has clarity and she didn’t go too far out of her boundaries. The production is tight, precise and sits well with the concept of the track. This one is peculiar, different from what she had done in previous years.

SWEETY

The next song is a switch from Pop to Highlife and of course, that’s what she is known for. She kept it laid back and you can just chill and vibe with her as the horns and percussion swirl you to a head nod as the record plays. Yemi Alade’s sounds are typical to dance and body movement and so no matter how laid back she was (which is one sign of her growth and maturity) on this song, the production, and her style still got the dance groove up. So expect to dance to the repeated lyrics; “My Sweety.”

IKE

This is another Afro-Pop record with a crazy interpolation of some eastern elements (mainly flutes and guitars slices). The artiste kept the pace up and flowed through the mashed-up sound of Afro, Pop, and other Afrikaan elements, all of which make the production somewhat special and unique (quite the song that will get a good reply value on anyone’s playlist). IKE is definitely the name of the dope guys she has been crazy about and she is determined to make him play her games. Sounds like the kind of song you will want them to jam on the radio after work.

ENJOYMENT

One thing anyone will enjoy about this EP is Yemi Alade’s laid-back vibe and the grace of the production line. The Afro-Pop record has a lot of moments; from the Afro-Pop production (which is unique because of the South African Dance interpolation that runs in the track line) to the sing-along lyrics which are not only easy but flow easily with the track. You definitely will dance listening to this. How she gets to keep it mellow and still get you going is the secret of her growth. Hopefully, we will get more vibes like this from her in the future.

DADA

Yemi Alade’s sound has always been rooted in Highlife, mixed with Dance or Pop. DADA is one of such. It is vibrant and very similar to her previous work( nothing special about this one). But, it stands out for its good replay value. For this and the fact that it is produced by Selebobo ( the guy who produced “Johnny”), the song is worth listening to and sure has a place in the EP.

ELLA

I think everybody should check this one out; the production is smooth and mellow. Like others, Yemi Alade was also laid back and vibrant. The sound is cohesive as it connects to other records on the EP. It’s more like an Afro-R&B record that passes a very positive message Of course, you wouldn’t even expect her vocals to sound this beautiful but it did sound beautiful. Please listen to this one again.

FIRE

This is a Dance interpolation (Afrobeat, Pop, Highlife) with plenty of dancing groove. The rhythm guitar can be heard twirling and thumbing parallel to the percussions and drums. The record is good as it has the potential to rock concerts and clubs depending on the day and night. But it doesn’t blend well with the previous records owing to its high tempo.

It has been a nice 7 song record, not bad at all. Her loyal fans will definitely love this project and hopefully, she will get more people to accept her with the EP.

Interestingly, “Queendoncom” is a good name for an album (it’s a statement). Although I don’t think she lived up to it yet, who knows; her next album might really bring out the beauty of this new path and sound that she’s found.

I think Yemi Alade has finally found herself on this EP (the sound is basically what she should focus on) but there is still a lot of work to do; her lyrics need to go up, her message has to be clear and she needs to bring out more fire. It’s just left to make good use of her relentless spirit and bring more out of her inner pantry on her next project.

We did expect more but it didn’t go our way and we hope she learns one or two things from this EP and step up her game higher.

The EP is rated 7 having a good reply value. So, go get it and enjoy all the lovely moments in there.

Patoranking Asks Slay Queens About Their Life Goals

Nigerian singer, Patoranking has sparked controversy on Instagram following his recent post.

The singer took to IG to ask a rhetorical question, but many felt he was referring to the slay queens and Influencers on the aesthetic app. Patoranking, however, wanted clarification on what they intended to do with their lives after taking pictures for the gram.

According to Pato, he is hoping their only goal in life is not to dress up and take pictures. He advised that if that was to be their life goal, that they should sit down and read his post again.

Some internet users who felt attacked were quick to remind the singer that Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and others make money from dressing up and posting photos on IG. Patoranking also reminded them that those mentioned have businesses and only see influencing as a side hustle unlike our slay queens who see Instagram as a full job.

Has Burna Boy Lost Local Acceptance Just To Stride Global Fame?

‘Question’ by Burna Boy evokes massive nostalgia, taking us all back to easier times…

Months after a celebratory win at the Grammy Awards, Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy drops his second solo single of 2021, “Question“. A sneer at naysayers who still can’t reconcile Odogwu being one of Africa’s greatest music export.

An easy hit with one of the biggest music moguls out of Africa in the last decade, Don Jazzy.

Question is a melodious number that reminds you of how playful Burna can be when he’s not making socially conscious music.

If there’s one thing that’s always been lacking in Damini’s music since he hit commercial success, it’s local acceptance.

In order to stride the corridors of fame, and enjoy global successes, Burna Boy has constantly alienated his audience. He’s dedicated himself to creating the kind of music that’s taken him across the ocean in the past three years and now that he brings one of the most credible African producers on ‘Question’, it is clear that Burna Boy may care for his local audience more than he cares to admit.

In the last couple of years since Burna Boy hit global success, he’s been very open about how much he’s had to struggle with acceptance from his core audience here in Nigeria, and to be honest numerous fans have equally come out to express the same. Opining that Nigerians never really supported him until the rest of the world did.

This is Damini Ogulu’s claim to fame. An unapologetic aim at the stars with his spaceship vehicle. A never settle mindset that’s earned him a Grammy, despite pessimists around him telling him the otherwise would happen because of his attitude.

Burna Boy Question Don Jazzy

Question is a really good song. But it does feel like Burna boy hanging on to echoes of an audience that refuses to really hear his pain, hear his anxiety, hear his genius.

Yes, Don Jazzy definitely props anyone up when it comes to street credibility. He may not have as much as Olamide does, but he’s got enough when combined with overall influence, enough to make almost everyone with a project knock on his doorstep for one final hearing.

Life itself is one big question that we all answer everyday, so the dominant satiric value of the song, was retained from start to finish. As an average human, you’re faced daily with questions you don’t have answers to.

So what happens when it’s time for Don Jazzy to answer a question like “When you go win Grammy?” He laughs, shrugs it off, and dances about it on a Burna Boy joint that’s got the whole country questioning everything they know about themselves.

So ask yourself these few questions;

Does Question sound like another Global hit? (Cue in the chorus)

Why’s Burna Boy consistently trying to make music for his ‘non-paying audience’? (Cue in the chorus)

It’s a really cool song. But as a solo single that wets our appetite while expecting his post-Grammy album? That’s a question I’m not very motivated to answer.

Rating 6/10.

Bloody Samaritan’ is a fierce and searing track that speaks to the importance of shedding and evading negative energy. Underpinned by blazing percussive drums and a colourful horn section, it is perhaps reflective of the wider album and its themes of wisdom, maturation, and poise.
