THE SECRET OF WIZKID’S SUCCESS . . TALENT OR HARDWORK?

It is no longer news that Wizkid’s music is one of Africa’s biggest exports. Everyone with interest in African music would have known by now, how highly demanded and widely heard, his music is.  His recently released, SFTOS album is enjoying hot airplay in and out of Africa, debuting #107 on the Billboard top 200 albums, while #2 on the world albums chart.

This is coming as added success to the concomitant achievements of collaborating with Drake, Chris Brown and other international artistes. Now, the Starboy himself is being considered in some quarters as an international artiste, and the ease with which his music is penetrating into the global market is giving credence to that fact. His journey to international prominence is a major topic in the circle of African music lovers and it is easy to guess why.

For a guy who started out as only a “Shitta Boy” with a dream, who used to run errands in OJB Jezreel’s studio while hoping to get a chance to record; getting to share a stage with Chris Brown and meeting up with Damian Marley should pass as part of the dream come true. His high rise to the global level of music making has been a marvel to some observers, sparking a debate as to what Wizkid owes his success to, his work ethics or talent.

Eldee tweeted in 2010, about Wiz being the future of Nigerian music, suggesting that Weezy’s talent is irrepressible, but with the rather strange thing that Wizkid is believed to have done recently, recording an album in barely two days of arriving in Nigeria; one can argue that his work ethics is the biggest recipe for his success.

How Would You Rate Mayorkun’s “MAMA” Song?

It appears Mayorkun is another bright product of DMW Records. I mean, asides their principal officer (Davido), Mayorkun is another artiste from the label churning out lovable songs.

For a guy who had such a boisterous introduction with the release of his music debut, Eleko, it wasn’t expected that he would find it so easy, considering the huge expectations that ensued the introduction. But Mayorkun somehow managed to coast on that wave.

With his most recent music release, Mama, he would be hoping to continue on this fine ride, but that depends largely on whether or not the song “bangs”.

So what do you think about Mama?
Is it hot, or perhaps lukewarm?

For me @ibironketweets, I feel it is only right to credit a brilliant work when you spot one. Mayorkun’s Mama is easily a song deserving of credit. It doesn’t only sound good, Mayorkun’s delivery on the song is lovely, plus the funny injections to the song, gives it an added flair. I’d say the song is a hot something and that’s probably why it is doing well on the charts.

@dahnieelz: Mayorkun is definitely enjoying his 2017 after the success of Sade which is in fact one of the best songs I have heard so far this year, and now Mama.

Mama has that infectious sound that quickly grows on you after the first play. The truth is, Mayorkun is gradually making his fans grow accustomed to his real sound, especially the way he uses those metaphors.

I had a little problem with the sound production though, the beat sounded too shallow. I believe the producer could have done better than this but still kudos to Kiddo! All in all it is a good song, probably his best since Eleko.

According to music video director, Adasa Cookey, Starboy Wizkid made a huge amount from the streaming of hit singles Come closer ft Drake and ‘My Love’.

Despite the obvious fact that Drake didn’t appear for the Come closer shoot, the visuals still raked about 33 million views on Youtube.

Adasa Cookey in a post he shared on his Instagram said Wizkid made over 55 million views from Come closer and ‘ My Love’ videos on popular streaming app Spotify which by the way is not available to Nigerian users.

The only tricky part of Adasa’s post is that, he said ‘My Love’ and there is no such song on Wizkid’s latest album (SFTOS).

The ace Director has since deleted the post but trust Nigerians to quickly take a screenshot.

Davido’s “Pere”. . With All The International Acts, I Am Still Disappointed

These days, lots of soft sell music have been churned out to the cyber space, the likes of Speed Darlington and the Bangdadadang craze will only be a distraction to the subject matter at hand.

The title of this review suggests a disappointment in Davido’s Pere irrespective of the international acts that graced the song. Really?

I’m not a big fan of Davido but honestly speaking, I do not feel disappointed in any way.

On Pere, Davido keeps it real as he still stays true to his sound despite the fact that the tune was produced by Murda Beatz who happens to be a renowned hip-hop producer.

On the record, Davido has shown us how confident he is with his style of music and it’s evident to note that the OBO isn’t ready to bend just to get the international accolades.

Also, the featured acts vibed to the tune under no duress.

Talking of the video, Sesan Ogunro should be applauded for this masterpiece. The directorial approach was certainly on point.

Lest I forget, all featured acts, Rae Sremmurd & Young Thug were present in the cut. And the chemistry? I need not say much.

NB: Not all songs are meant to top the chart.

Davido, Davido, Davido.

The hustle is indeed 125 these days now. Pardon me for saying but this is not world class music at all. It is however the next best and closest, Davido has come at making a world class attempt. The first of course being the Meek Mill feature, Fans Mi.

Can anybody else hear how inconsistent the mix on the song was, with our dear Davido’s parts sounding the worst? At this point in the OBO’s career, the delivery of his works should be blemish free with the kind of exposure and  experience he has. What then is the brag on this international shandalooloo about if the presentation of his package has the appearance of an aspiring local? Let’s be brutally honest, can this record match up to those by his colleagues abroad? The Young Thugs and Rae Sremmurds?

Regardless, shoutout to OBO for the music video, it is very top notch and the blend amongst the artistes is quite admirable. Davido is one young stunna setting the Nigerian standard for what music should be, especially in pictures. But because he has chosen to remain unsusceptible on the need for proper creative direction in his music, he has failed and therefore lags behind on attempts at pulling the lead.

Yhusuff says not all songs should top the charts. True that, I’m in total agreement even. But music atleast is impression… and Davido’s Pere is devoid of any.

In an industry blessed with many talented female artistes, South African Presenter and OAP, Bonang Matheba thinks Mavin’s First Lady, Tiwa Savage is the only Femcee in the country.
