Iyke Stevens (formerly Iyke Uwalaka) had his 1st Album 2007, Afro beat genre. For political reasons, that album was withdrawn and by 2012 he made effort to release another album of western genre tune, but had an encounter with Satan who requested that he has to sign a 15 years deal with him of which Iyke declined and quited music.
He came out with another album by 2014 by a solo effort. A western genre based record “Like A Superfly” (iykestevens.bandcamp.com and distributed by Tjoe records) which record hit a brick wall as a result of poor promotion of that Album. The album was eventually pulled down from all the online stores with the exception of iykestevens.bandcamp.com

These two have been the most talked about Nigerian music stars this year as well as the music stars that have achieved the most, plainly with their music. However, for the sake of one necessity in music which is competition/comparison, i would like to briefly evaluate these two stars’ individual achievements in the music scene in 2019 after which i would urge you to pick who you think deserves to be the artiste of the year.
Burna Boy
Burna already kick-started his own 2019 in December 2018 with the release of his massive hit-single, “Killin Dem” featuring Zlatan which turned-out to be a massive force in 2019 due to its massive acceptance and unrivalled influence on music enthusiasts. After that beast of a record, Burna proceeded to drop “Dangote” which resonated with music lovers and did well in its own huge way.
After “Dangote,” Burna moved-on to dropping another massive single; “Anybody” which till now still does well with music fans. With no signs of weakness shown, the “African Giant” decided to wrap-up the year with his 5th successful studio album; “African Giant,” which just recently became the first modern-day Afrobeat music project to be nominated for a grammy award. Apart from his music works, Burna Boy embarked on a massive tour of the world, performing at several cities in Africa, North America and Europe. He has also won numerous awards, one of which is the BET Best African Act award. All in 2019.
Naira Marley
Naira’s name has never been as big as Burna’s even before they both became established music superstars. All the music artiste has become today sub-consciously and luckily started in this year alone. Someone that i always describe as a product of grace and a smart-hardworking-opportunist. Naira Marley made the most of the unfair side of life that came his way. He encountered a turbulence that naturally would signalle the end of many, but he in particular stood tall, brought to the fore his bravery and made a permutation that wouldn’t even occur to a few people in such a challenging situation (a permutation that made him realize his challenging situation was a golden opportunity to become the reality of his dream). It would be surprising to you if you are a new follower of Nigerian music that Naira Marley, the man that sang the hit single, “Soapy” has been to jail in 2019 already. I know right?
It would interest you to know that apart from “Soapy” he also has other massive records within the year. Records like “Am I A Yahoo Boy,” “Opotoyi,” “Mafo” are several of his records in 2019 that have proven to be some of the biggest records in the Nigerian music industry. Hunted by his lewd lyrics, some part of the Nigerian music industry still feel he isn’t a worthy candidate for award consideration, but if the impact of songs are solely what is considered in giving awards, then it would definitley not be a surprise if Naira Marley goes home with the most number of plaques at award ceremonies come the time the year 2019 is put under review of award organizers. Nobody has more hit songs than Naira Marley in the Nigerian music industry in 2019 and it is the most obvious fact.
Did i forget Marlians, their genesis, their current influence and power and how their president has been able to sustain their industry relevance? That’s a topic for another day. Teni’s break into the music industry is still a puzzle as she literally did it on her terms. In an industry where women have to present themselves a sexual fantasy just to be up to the standard and successful, Teni has proved that one doesn’t have to bare it all just to be accepted. Since her rise to fame, the singer has refused to slow down with her monstrous hits that have even made Nigerians forget the harsh conditions in which they live in.
Teni’s motto is the popular saying “I can’t come and kill myself” and this is reflected in not her personality but also her music. As suspected, Teni doesn’t write her music, she flows with anything that pops into her head making her a very rare gem for the music industry. This year has been more than exceptional for her as she was recognized internationally snagging both BET and MTV nominations. She collaborated with several artistes and just like Zlatan, a Teni featured is considered gold.
The singer dropped ”Billionaire” towards the end of the year which instantly hit charts without a music video at the time of its release. She later released the “Billionaire” EP which is one of the best projects released this year. Although her story is still in progress, Teni definitely deserves more accolades as her whole careers has been solely based on being her true self and surviving in an industry where the females are not recognized.
The African Bad Girl as she is fondly called hit it really big this year. After briefly leaving the music scene at the beginning of the year, she announced her partnership with Universal Music Group which made her entry into the international scene a much easier one.
Tiwa later dropped her first single of the year “49-99”. Written by herself and Olamide, the track which was inspired by the late king of afrobeat, Fela talks about the hard conditions in which Nigerian’s live. Its iconic colorful video which is arguably one of the best videos released this year was directed by one of the country’s finest, Meji Alabi.
Tiwa Savage was on Beyonce’s “The Gift” album as a featured artiste for the track “Keys to the Kingdom” with Mr Eazi. She was also on the remix of American rapper, Saweetie’s hit track “My Type” alongside Wale and French Montana. With just three singles to her name, many sold-out concerts and several collaborations this year; Tiwa Savage did a fantastic job showing that she is THAT international star that we all love.
Although she is not well recognized in Nigeria, Yemi Alade has continued to extend her wings to not only Africa but other parts of the world. Her impressive numbers have done nothing but constantly increase making her the most streamed female artiste on various digital platforms. She also became the first female African artiste to surpass 1 million subscribers on YouTube in July.
Yemi Alade had American rapper, Rick Ross on the remix of her hit single “Oh My Gosh” which was accompanied with a captivating and colorful video. She was also one of the many artistes to be featured on Beyonce’s “The Gift” album. She was on the track “Don’t Jealous Me” alongside Mr Eazi and Tekno.
After dropping several hit singles, she dropped her 4th studio album “Woman of Steel” which garnered millions of streams and was sent to the Grammys for consideration but didn’t make the nominations. Towards the end of the year, she signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group which is a partnership between her record label and UMG. Despite the bashing she receives for her lack of lyrical content, Yemi Alade this year proved that she is still a force to reckon with.
Simi’s voice was literally everywhere this year making fans fall in love with her the more. After dropping the heartwarming “Ayo”, Simi released “Omo Charlie Champagne” on her birthday. The album which was a tribute to her late father featured artistes like Patoranking, Adekunle Gold and other prominent acts in the industry.
Simi tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend and singer, Adekunle Gold in a very private ceremony with only 300 guests in attendance. They released a track “Promise” which chowed clips from looked like their actual wedding ceremony and their wedding vows. She also collaborated with acts like Mr Eazi and Ghanaian singer, Manifest making her one of the most powerful singers in the industry this year.
Niniola Is Nigeria’s queen of Afro-house and it appears she won’t be dropping her crown anytime soon. After participating in MTN Project Fame show, Niniola was determined to be the best of the best. Her collaborations this year have all been major hits as she dishes out unique party jams. A Niniola song is one you can’t ignore when you listen to it. This is what probably Canadian rapper, Drake saw and couldn’t resist adding her tracks to his playlist. He even went as far as following her on Instagram to show that he has been hooked. Fans are actually hoping that things get serious between the two
However, Drake wasn’t the only international star that fell in love with Nini’s style of music as Beyonce also got hooked. It wasn’t really made public but she was one of the other artistes that worked on Beyonce’s “The Gift” album and was given credit by the singer. This year, Niniola has shown that she has what it takes to be the best of the best.

Y’all would recall we brought you news some hours ago about MI throwing a light shade at Akon for calling Wizkid his little brother which has generated a lot of negative energy from internet users going his way. After, the backlash he got as a result of the infamous opinion, everyone would think the short rapper would retract his opinion but they seemed to be wrong as “Chairman” stands firm on his opinion as well as going further to drop another bombshell.
The “Chairman” rapper has yet again taken to his Twitter page to reveal he believes Wizkid has achieved more for African music than Akon has achieved and believes Wizkid is an icon and will always remain nobody’s “lil bro.”
He wrote; “I have an opinion: few African artists in diaspora actually did anything to REALLY help the movement.. as a fan of Wizkid (which I am) I don’t see Wiz as lil bro to Akon.. he has overcome larger obstacles to accomplish way more (in my eyes).. In my opinion Wiz is lil bro to none.”
This opinion has yet again blown things up with more people roasting MI on the internet and telling him to take a break from using his phone as it would save him the embarrassment he has consciously and unintentionally brought upon himself.

The short-rapper who has majorly been silent on social media since his duel with Vector some months back took to his Twitter page to call-out American-Senegalese superstar, Akon, for calling Wizkid his little brother. It seemed MI was not impressed with the adjective Akon used in qualifying Wizkid as it is what he always has been using since he knew him. It appears he feel it’s about time he moved-on from referring to Wizkid as that as he is now a ‘big-fish’ in Africa.

However, MI appeared to have calculated this move wrongly as his hopes for the tweet were completely shattered, and it started only a moment after the post. People, on seeing the tweet were appalled and upset as to why MI would have come on the internet to write such a disgraceful tweet. He was served some real bitter words and ‘dragged like a thief who stole a valubale at Balogun market’ for losing his sense of reasoning which led him to that unnecessary and completely irritating tweet. Many believed MI only wanted to clout chase, losing his primary & secondary sense-for-thought.
Internet users referred MI towards the age of Wizkid, 29 and Akon’s, 46 and asked him why the Senegalese was wrong to call Starboy his “lil bro.”

After being blessed by an appearance by Davido at his concert at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, Kizz Daniel just 24-hours later reciprocated Davido’s kind gesture as he also made an appearance at the OBO’s concert at the Energy City of the Eko Atlantic City in Lagos.
The singer who was supposed to perform at Davido’s concert at the same venue last year but didn’t perform for some mysterious resons came on stage this time around to show some love and add more juice to the concert. He performed “One Ticket” with the “Baddest” and also his hit single “Pak n’ Go.”

The superstar singer who went against his father’s wish of going into music seems to have now proven his father wrong and instead made him his greatest fan. Davido shared the Whatsapp message sent to him by his father on his Instagram Story some hours ago in which the pride, happiness, emotion, incomparable joy at which he had watching thousands of people troop out to watch his son perform was put in words.
Dr Adedeji Adeleke expressed from the deep-end of his heart his overwhelming feeling at the success of his son’s music craft and his prided to watch it happen.
He wrote; “My Dear son David, to God be the glory for the talent he bestowed on you. You gave an Excellent account of yourself at your concert. You exhibited Raw Talent, Genius, Industry Staying Power, Organization and Hard work. You came fully prepared and rehearsed. I am very proud of you as your dad and i will continue to pray for you and thank God for you. I love you added.”
He added; “I wished you had stayed 30 minutes more to play songs from your new album. You have a lot of very nice songs in your new album. People were not ready to leave when you closed the concert.”
